Working with Special Needs and Learning Challenged students is both exciting and rewarding! I’ll go further and say that it is some of the most rewarding work I have ever done not only as a Certified Driving Instructor but in retrospect, also in my entire adult working career.
ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) and ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) are not unusual conditions that we see in the course of Driver’s Education work and daily life.
The advice and personal stories you will read in these pages started as a series of notes to help me understand what I was experiencing with various students. As I sought advice and help from those who already worked with neurodiverse people (special education teachers and advocates, paraprofessionals, Occupational Therapists, vision professionals, and others), those notes became more detailed, especially as I saw a “new” pattern and methodology of better instructing my students unfolding.
The Road to Greater Independence for the Neurodiverse has been written for the layperson who may not have the training I’ve been blessed with and fortunate to have participated in. Whether you’re a regular driving instructor, a parent, or a student, I believe you’ll find useful tools and ideas to implement as you work with your neurodiverse student.
